The device has an input device (20) into which a cassette (40) with a storage phosphor panel can be input and a read-out device in which the panel can be irradiated with stimulation light and the emission light excited in the panel can be detected. The mechanical elements (22,24,26,27) are mechanically driven by a movement of the cassette in order to enable locking and/or opening of cassette in input device. An independent claim is included for a method for reading X-ray information stored in storage phosphor panels.
