Dissolved organic material is removed from water by contact with an anion-exchange resin containing predominantly strongly basic groups, preferably in the chloride form, and activated carbon. Subsequently the water may be further treated by a mixed anionic and cationic exchange bed or by electrodialysis. The carbon may be periodically regenerated with caustic soda at 80 DEG C.
