Polymers or copolymers of chlorine-containing ethylenically unsaturated hydrocarbons are stabilized by the addition of 5-aminotetrazole, a salt thereof with an amine or an inorganic base, or a 5-acylamino-tetrazole. Polymers specified are vinyl and vinylidene chloride homopolymers and their copolymers with one another and with vinyl acetate. The stabilizers may be used alone or in admixture with one another and/or other stabilizers in amounts of 0,1 to 5 wt per cent. Compounds specified in the description and examples are:-5-amino-tetrazole; its sodium, potassium, calcium, barium, zinc, stannous, stannic, cadmium and aluminium salts; and 5-benzoylamino-, acetylamino-, phenylureido-, lauroylamino-, stearoylamino- and p-chlorobenzoylamino -tetrazole. In the examples the polymers are polyvinyl chloride, which may be plasticized with C12-14 alkyl sulphonic acid ester of a phenolcresol mixture or dioctyl phthalate; a vinyl chloride/acetate copolymer; and polyvinylidene chloride. |
