Amino-styrene homo- or co-polymers are prepared by converting an acylstyrene polymer dissolved in a solvent therefor and containing units of formula <FORM:1003087/C3/1> where R is a C1- 3-alkyl or aryl radical, with hydrazoic acid in the presence of an excess of sulphuric acid to an acyl aminostyrene polymer which is then hydrolysed. The acylstyrene may be p-acetylstyrene. The hydrazoic acid may be prepared in situ by reacting sodium azide with sulphuric acid. The solvent for the acylstyrene polymer may be a mixture of acetic and sulphuric acids and the acylaminostyrene polymer may be hydrolysed in a mixture of ethanol, hydrochloric acid and water. The p-aminostyrene polymer may be treated with tetramethyl-p,p1-diamino benzhydrol to form N-(p11 - vinyl phenyl) - tetramethyl - p,p1 - diaamino benzhydryl amine polymer. The poly-(acetyl styrene) may be prepared by acethylation of polystyrene. |
