A method for tracking a moving vehicle includes detecting the vehicle by acquiring a series of temporal related image frames S404. In an initial frame S410, the detecting includes locating a reference feature representative of a vehicle S412. The method further includes setting the reference feature as a full size template S414, tracking the vehicle S416 by searching a current frame S418 for features matching the full-size template and at least one scaled template S426. Based on the matching correlation S432 between the feature and the templates setting as the updated template one of the full-size or the scaled templates S434. The method includes repeating the tracking using the updated template for each next frame in the series. Further disclosed is a system for performing the method. A further embodiment comprises determining and storing the location of the vehicle in successive frames.      The method and system may be used to determine the speed of the vehicle for enforcement purposes. |
