Each of the three zones contain natural uranium. Zones I, III have graphite and zone II has heavy water as a moderator. The fuel rods 1 are cooled by an organic fluid flowing in the tubes 2. The graphite moderator is either gas or heavy water cooled. Plutonium is formed from the U238 in the natural uranium by the excess of neutrons formed in heavy water zones.
