[Also in Group XVII] An apparatus for filling and compacting loose materials 2 in cartridges comprises guiding-means 6; a rubber &c. support 9 resting on a platform 8 for the lower end of the container when the latter is in its lowermost position; and a rotary cam means 10 operative to engage frictionally the external wall of the container to thereby raise and lower the container 3 from its support without any change in the direction of rotation. A detachable funnel 1 has a tubular extension 4 adapted to fit over the upper end of the container 3. The cams 10 of rubber &c. are mounted on shafts 11 and rotate in opposite directions when driven through pinion 14 and gear-wheels 12. The cams have flattened portions arranged so that the container is alternately raised and dropped on to the support 9, causing the material flowing into the container to be compacted. The apparatus can be used for varying widths and lengths of containers, with no mechanical adaptations. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the cams are carried by pivoted arms connected by a tension-spring so as to urge the cams towards the container. The arms may be separated by means of a linkage and a manually-operated lever for insertion of the container; and to adjust the position of the cams to compensate for wear. |
