A shorthand gesture arrangement, for character input to an electronic device 100 having an input means 118 for detecting gestures, comprises: detecting a gesture 122 from a set of gestures restricted to a specific number of identifiable gestures; monitoring the sequence of gestures 124; identifying a subset of the sequence and a corresponding symbol or character; translating the gesture sequence into the symbol 124 and providing it to the device as input 128. The input means may operate based on predetermined axes, and the gesture set may take advantage of those axes to minimise the interpretation needed. The subset may comprise at least two gestures, which may be sequential. The electronic device may include a touch-sensitive context menu for facilitating the input operation. The use of a reduced set of gestures minimises the need for complex character recognition algorithms and processing power. |
