583,560. Crankshafts. DOXFORD & SONS, Ltd., W., and PURDIE, W. H. Oct. 31, 1944, No. 21273. [Class 80 (ii)] In a crankshaft for a single- or multi-cylinder internal combustion engine of the opposedpiston type, radiussed fillets 19, normally provided to avoid stress concentration, are recessed into the crank-webs 12 to avoid increase in overall length. The side crankpins 13 have a smaller throw than the centre crankpin 15, and the shaft is built up from two forgings, each comprising a journal 11 with an integral web 12 and side crankpin 13 at each end (or with a coupling-flange at one end in the case of the end web). The main crank-webs 14 are shrunk on to the side pins 13 and centre pin 15, and may be cranked as shown to permit use of a longer big-end bearing on the pin 15. The big-ends 22 have rubbing strips 21, Fig. 3. The radius of the fillet 19 is reduced by half for each 90 degrees of the curve from the crankpin 13 shown in Fig. 3. Specifications 234,659, 259,065, [both in Class 80 (ii)], and 547,111 are referred to. |
