Non-pilling fibres are made by melting synthetic polymers at temperatures of 250 DEG -300 DEG C., the molten polymer having a viscosity of 250-2,000 poises at the extrusion temperature, and extruding the melt through a spinneret having holes of non-circular cross-section. The meltspun polymer may be a polyester or copolyester, especially one containing terephthalic acid esters, e.g. condensation products of ethylene glycol with terephthalic acid, with mixtures of terephthalic acid with isophthalic acid, 5(sodium sulpho)-isophthalic acid, or with aliphatic acids, e.g. sebacic or adipic acid, polyesters of terephthalic acid with glycols other than ethylene glycol, or may be an acrylonitrile polymer or copolymer, a polyolefine, e.g. polyethylene or polypropylene, or a polyamide, e.g. poly(hexamethylene adipamide). The spinneret holes may be cross-shaped or Y-shaped.
