Acylcyanides are prepared by reacting in the vapour phase hydrogen cyanide and a carboxylic acid anhydride at an elevated temperature and in the presence of a surface active catalyst. The anhydride may be acetic-, benzoic-, propionic-, isobutyric-, adipic-, glutaric-, or sebacic anhydride, and specified catalysts are charcoal, silica gel, titania gel, alumina gel, alumina, boron- or aluminiumphosphate or "Superfiltrol" (Registered Trade Mark). In the examples: (1) acetic anhydride and hydrogen cyanide are passed over activated charcoal or silica gel giving acetyl cyanide; (2) isobutyric anhydride and hydrogen cyanide are passed over activated alumina giving isobutyryl cyanide; (3) benzoic anhydride, hydrogen cyanide and dioxane are passed over granular charcoal giving benzoyl cyanide. |
