A battery is activated by a piston and cylinder arrangement powered by a gas generating cartridge and operative to displace the electrode assembly into contact with the electrolyte. In Fig. 1, the piston 41 is operated by gas produced in the first instance by an electrically fired gas cartridge 20 backed up by a gas cylinder 16, the diaphragm of which is pierced by a pin 28.
