PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact variable magnification optical system and an optical device which exhibit superior optical performances, and to provide a manufacturing method for the variabl magnification optical system.SOLUTION: A variable magnification optical system: comprises a first lens group G1 having a positive refractive power, a second lens group G2 having a negative refractive power, a third lens group G3 having a positive refractive power, and a fourth lens group G4 having a positive refractive power in this order from the object side, where the first lens group G1 includes at least one lens having a positive refractive power and at least one lens having a negative refractive power; is configured such that a distance between the first lens group G1 and the second lens group G2, a distance between the second lens group G2 and the third lens group G3, and a distance between the third lens group G3 and the fourth lens group G4 are changed when magnification from a wide-angle end state to a telephoto end state; and fulfills a prescribed formula. |
