A polyethylene blend having a density of 0.925 to 0.935 g/cc is prepared by mixing 20 to 45 weight per cent of a polyethylene having a density of less than 0.920 g/cc., 30 to 60 weight per cent of a polyethylene having a density of 0.924 to 0.933 g/cc. and at least 10 weight per cent of a polyethylene having a density above 0.945 g/cc. The melt indices of the resultant blend and of the three polyethylene components of the blend are preferably 3.5 to 15 g/10 min., 1.5 to 5 g/10 min., 5 to 15 g/10 min. and 3 to 35 g/10 min., respectively. The polyethylene components of the blend are all high molecular weight solid polyethylenes having melting points of at least 110 DEG C. In the examples the polyethylenes were dry blended and after extrusion were applied to Kraft paper to form a coating thereon. The blends of the invention may be modified by adding stabilizers, antioxidants, pigments, dyes, light absorbers &c. or may be modified by after treatments. |
