PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect a bank note caught in a space between a first shutter and a second shutter.SOLUTION: The bank note handling device includes: a bank note entrance and exit portion having an aperture for inserting and discharging a bank note, and a bank note pocket arranged below the aperture for temporarily pooling a bank note inserted from the aperture or discharged from the aperture; a first shutter disposed on the aperture; a second shutter disposed between the aperture and the bank note pocket; a sensor detecting existence of a bank note between the aperture and the bank note pocket; and a first lever disposed on the second shutter side of the first shutter. When the first shutter closes, at least part of the first lever moves to the second shutter side in a space which is not detected by the sensor.
