A flat weftless fabric tape used, by overlapping and securing its ends, for strapping boxes, articles, &c., is formed of a plurality of high tenacity-tyre-cord type yarns adhered together in side-by-side arrangement. " Tyrecord type yarn," as herein used, means a yarn comprising two or more strands, each of which contains a multiplicity of continuous filaments, the individual strands being each twisted in the direction opposite to the twist of the complete yarn. The yarn may be of regenerated cellulose or viscose rayon, nylon, polyethylene, polypropylene, or an acrylic polymer. An adhesive may be used consisting of an aqueous solution of polyvinyl alcohol or an emulsion containing polyvinyl acetate, with or without polyvinyl alcohol, a filler, e.g. clay, and a plasticizer, e.g. dibutyl phthalate. Where the yarns are thermoplastic they may be autogenously bonded by means of heat. As shown, Fig. 6, the yarn 13 comprises two strands 14 and 15, each formed of a large multiplicity of continuous textile filaments twisted together, the strands being twisted or plied together, in the opposite direction to that of the filaments. In forming the tape a number of yarns are brought together in side-by-side relationship, led through an aqueous bath containing an adhesive, and dried under tension. In use, the ends of the tape 11, Fig. 2, are overlapped within a metal sleeve consisting of a piece of sheet metal bent into the form of a flat tube and laterally corrugated, the tape is drawn taut about the package &c. and the sleeve is then crimped entirely across the width thereof as at 18 and 19 so that each of the yarns forming the tape is correspondingly crimped. The sleeve is also deformed inwardly against the side edges of the tape at 20 to grip the tape more securely, and may be given additional small indentations on the line of the crimpings 18, 19 these indentations gripping individual yarns and being staggered in the two lines.
