PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and method which enables prompt and accurate identification of a deformation or liberation of a system component, such as an airfoil of a gas turbine etc.SOLUTION: The damage detection apparatus includes a first grid 125 of sensors 120 arranged in a first orientation on a surface of a component 110 and configured to generate a first set of signals. The apparatus also includes a second grid 135 of sensors 130, independent of the first grid of sensors, arranged in a second orientation on an insulating layer provided on the surface of the component and configured to generate a second set of signals, the second orientation overlapping with the first orientation. A processor 140 detects damage on the basis of a change in at least one signal of the first set of signals or the second set of signals.
