The present invention relates to an image display device and a method for operating the same. The method for operating an image display device according to an embodiment of the present invention comprises the following steps: a stage extracting a left-eye image and a right-eye image from an input signal; a stage detecting a text region from the left-eye image or the right-eye image; a stage varying brightness with respect to a partial region of the text when a predetermined text is arranged in the text region; a stage arranging at least a portion of the left-eye image including the brightness-varied text in either an odd line or an even line, and arranging at least a portion of the right-eye image including the brightness-varied text in the remaining line; and a stage displaying the arranged images. Therefore, user convenience can be improved.
