Nanocrystalline phosphocalcic compound having an apatite structure with antimicrobial and non-stoichiometric properties, is new. The compound comprises a surface layer of hydrated non-apatite phospho-calcium. The layer is doped with an antimicrobial agent consisting of silver ion, copper ion, zinc ion and/or an oxygenated species including oxygen ion, oxygen, superoxide ion or peroxide ion.
