In an installation for the recovery of heat from a fluid under pressure, especially the gas coolant from a nuclear reactor, a number of heat exchange units 1, for example steam generating units as described in Specification 909,557, each including a vertically elongated pressure vessel are distributed around the axis of a cylindrical concrete structure 2 which forms a biological shield. The heating fluid enters an axial distributer vessel 7 and flows therefrom through radial pipes 12 to the inlet nozzles 8 of the heat exchange units, passes downwardly therethrough and through radial pipes to a lower axial collector vessel, not shown. The heated fluid, for example, steam, leaves the units through pipes such as 23. The distributer vessel 7 is supported on a platform 14 resting on shoulders 15 provided on the structure. To allow for movements of the units 1 towards and away from the centre axis which occur in operation due to the thermal contraction and expansion of the horizontal lengths 121 of the pipes 12, each unit is suspended by its inlet nozzle from a carriage 10 which rests on rollers 11 running on the edges of a radial passage 4 in a peripheral corbel 3 projecting from the wall of the structure 2. The heat exchange units are introduced into or removed from the structure 2 through doorways 5, 6, the units being handled within the structure by a winch on a carriage 19 running on a turn bridge 18 supported from rollers 17 engaging tracks 17A below the platform 14. In modifications, the platform 14 is dispensed with, the vessel 7 being supported on a roller bearing resting on the turnbridge, the ends of which rest on rollers running on tracks on the shoulders 15. The lower end of the vessel 7 extends below the turn bridge and is connected to the units 1 by radial pipes and elbow pieces, Fig. 3 (not shown), or by radial pipes and an intermediate ring distributer, Fig. 5 (not shown). Alternatively, the pipe 12 pass around the ends of the turn bridge before connecting to the units 1.
