The functional element has a head unit (12) to form a flange, a sheet metal contact surface (18) formed at the head unit and a connecting section (22) arranged on a side of the sheet metal contact surface extending away from the head unit, particularly coaxial to a central longitudinal axis (20) of the functional element. The connecting section has a circumferential bead (24) below the sheet metal contact surface. A circumferential groove (26) is provided between the bead and the sheet metal contact surface.
