The invention relates to a method for producing a fibre preform by depositing reinforcing fibre bundles (20) on a surface (25), said method having the steps: - supplying an endless belt-shaped strand (6) of reinforcing fibres incorporating a binder, wherein the strand has a strand width of at least 5 mm and a binder content ranging from 2 to 45% w/w; - spreading the strand out in a spreading unit (7) and conveying it in a conveying direction by means of a first conveyor device (8) to a longitudinal cutting device, in doing so stabilizing the strand in the direction transverse to the conveying direction; - cutting the strand in the longitudinal cutting device along the longitudinal extent of the strand into at least two substrands; - conveying the substrands by means of a second conveying device (16) to a cutting unit; - cutting the substrands by means of the cutting unit (18) into reinforcing fibre bundles and; - depositing the reinforcing fibre bundles on a surface.
