An automatic nose lifting device for converting a tailsitter V.T.O.L. aircraft A from substantially horizontal to substantially vertical while the engine thrust is progressively increased and the aircraft moves along a near horizontal path, comprises a unit 3 producing a first signal proportional to the square of the horizontal aircraft speed during the conversion, means 13, 14 responsive to the first signal and producing, respectively, a pitch angle control signal and an engine thrust control signal controlling respectively the elevator servo-apparatus 26 and engine thrust servoapparatus 29. The unit 3 may be a differential transformer coupled to a capsule subjected to the differences between total and static pressures detected by elements 1, 2. The signal # from means 13 is applied to amplifier 24 including a feed back control 25, Fig. 6 (not shown), together with signals from control stick 8, vertical gyro 6 and rate gyro 7 to supply a signal to servos 26.
