A multi-stage turbine has a flow passage extending over a portion of the available flow area of the turbine defining a series flow path through the turbine stages, and a second flow passage through a second portion of the available flow area providing parallel flow through the turbine stages. Turbine wheels 10, 11 are fixed to a shaft 12 supported in bearings 14, 15, 16. The turbine casing has a nozzle box 20 defined by an arc A extending between walls 23, 24. High energy driving fluid from an inlet conduit 18 enters the nozzle box 20 and passes via nozzle vanes 21, the buckets 22 of the first wheel 11, guide vanes 27 attached to a diaphragm 29, the buckets 28 of the second turbine wheel 10 to an exhaust conduit 30. Low energy driving fluid is admitted at an inlet duct 32 which blends into an inlet scroll 34 provided with a peripheral opening 35 extending over an arc B complementary to arc A. Compressed-air flows through the opening 35 is directed into oppositely directed passages 37, 38 by means of a radially extending flow splitter 39 on the diaphragm 26 so that the turbine stages are driven in parallel. The exhaust from the turbine wheel 10 passes to atmosphere via apertures 43 in an exhaust hood 42 and from the turbine wheel 11 through apertures 45 in an exhaust chamber 44.
