The method involves programming (1) a serial number into a chip and deriving (2) public key infrastructure-key pair using the serial number, where a private key is provided as a root key and public key as a provider key. The root key is encrypted with a data key and is stored on the chip in the encrypted form, where the provider key, the data key and an identifier, particularly the serial number, which uniquely identifies the chips, are provided (4) for transmission to a server. A normal operating system is arranged for generating and maintaining an uncertain runtime.
