PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic cash handling device capable of preventing coexistence of customer cash and in-machine cash as much as possible even if a failure occurrence spot is a transport path used for a transaction.SOLUTION: An automatic cash handling device includes: an opening part 14 for introducing and outputting cash; a retention part 130 for temporarily retaining introduced cash; a transport mechanism 150 having a first transport path for transporting cash between the opening part and retention part; sensors S1-S10 for detecting cash transported in the transport mechanism; and a distinguishing part 111 for distinguishing customer cash to be returned to a customer from among cash transported in the transport mechanism and cash introduced into the opening part on the basis of a detection result of a sensor and a transporting state of the cash introduced into the opening part. Further the device outputs the distinguished customer cash from the opening part and then interrupts handling of cash.
