A method of making an electrical connection to a semi-conductor body comprises heating a metallic terminal of plate or strip form capable of being wetted by the fused semi-conductor in contact with the body to cause fusion of a restricted zone of the body adjacent to the terminal, heating being applied to the body by conduction through the thickness of the terminal, pressing the terminal against the body so that the terminal is displaced relatively to the body, ceasing heating when the terminal has been displaced to a predetermined position, and allowing the fused semi-conductor to solidify so as to effect a bond between the body and the terminal. The heating is preferably by means of an induction coil. The semi-conductor element 1 is placed in the lower end of a jig 2 the side walls of which are formed by two magnetic polepieces 3 energized by a horseshoe magnet 7. A passage extending through brass block 4 which acts as a stop connects the inside of the jig with a vacuum line 6 so that element 1 is held at the top of the jig. The polepieces 3 are insulated from magnet 7 and from brass block 4 and element 1 by mica strips 8, 14 and an iron terminal 9 bridges the polepieces. The vacuum chamber 10 is filled with argon. When the induction coil is energized, a localised region of semi-conductor body 1 is fused thus causing plate or strip terminal 9 to contact the polepieces so that lamp 13 lights; the induction coil is then switched off. Another terminal extending at right angles to the first is bonded to the opposite face of element 1. In making a thermoelectric device a number of semi-conductor elements are assembled in a rectangular array and connected electrically in series, adjacent elements being of opposite conducting type. The hot and cold junctions are on opposite sides of the assembly. Each element is a cube and has iron strip terminals on opposite faces thereof. The semi-conductor element is of general formula X 2 , Y 3 , where X is at least one of Bi, Sb, As and Y is at least one of tellurium, Se, S, e.g. bismuth telluride, antimony telluride bismuth selenide, and solid solutions of two or more of such compounds.
