The invention relates to a method for operating a dryer (1) comprising a program control unit (8), a drum (3) for pieces of laundry to be dried, a process air duct (2) in which a process air blower (6) for conveying the process air and a heating unit (4) for heating the process air are located, and a variable-speed motor (13) which drives the drum (3) and the process air blower (6). The method comprises a heat-up phase, a semi-stationary drying phase and a cool-down phase, the variable-speed drive motor (13) being operated at an average speed α1 and the process air blower (6) being operated at an average speed ω1 during the semi-stationary drying phase, and the drive motor (13) being operated at a speed α2 which is smaller than α1 and the process air blower (6) being operated at a speed ω2 which is smaller than ω1 at least intermittently during the cool-down phase. The invention further relates to a dryer suitable for performing said method.
