PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a Diesel exhaust filter improved in performance and cost.SOLUTION: Provided is an improved Diesel exhaust filter element of the type having a rigid porous wall portion. The porous wall portion has a first side and a second side. The porous wall portion is coated with a precious metal catalyst and an NOabsorbent. Consequently, when exhaust gas from a Diesel engine is flowed through the rigid porous wall portion from the first side to the second side and the exhaust gas contains excess oxygen, NOand soot, the soot in the exhaust gas is trapped within the rigid porous wall and is catalytically oxidized to carbon dioxide, and NO is catalytically oxidized to NO, which NOis then absorbed by the NOabsorbent. When the exhaust gas contains excess hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide, the NOabsorbent is regenerated and the remaining hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide are catalytically converted to nitrogen and carbon dioxide. The rigid porous wall comprises an acicular ceramic. |
