PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved diagnosis marker for detection and treatment of malignant condition (e.g., cancer) and a target for treatment.SOLUTION: The invention provides a nucleic acid sequence for encoding soluble and cell surface forms of HE4a polypeptides, including HE4a overexpressed in ovarian cancer, provides a method for detecting reactivity of an antibody specific for the HE4a polypeptide with a molecule naturally existing in soluble and/or cell surface form in a sample from such a subject, and provides a method for screening relating to presence of a malignant condition in a subject by hybridization screening by using an HE4a nucleotide sequence.
