The enrichment factor of heavy water in the aqueous phase of the products obtained from the continuous catalytic hydrogenation of CO at an elevated temperature in the presence of catalysts comprising a metal of Group VIII is increased provided the space velocity is in excess of 250 v/v/hr, pressure in excess of 5 kg/sq. cm., temperature below 220 DEG C., and conversion is maintained below 15% of total CO and H2 present. The catalyst may be precipitated iron, and may be a fixed bed, slurry, fluidized bed, or moving bed. The recycle ratio should be low, e.g. 0,1:1 to 1:1, and once through operation is preferred. The H2:CO molar ratio should be greater than 1,5:1. The catalyst may be periodically extracted with a solvent for paraffins, e.g. Diesel oil, without interrupting the hydrogenation. The liquor may be distilled or extracted to remove O2-containing organic compounds.
