In apparatus for transferring fuel from a reservoir to the fuel tanks of aircraft, a pump 22, Fig. 1, in a main pumping station 19 draws fuel from reservoirs 10 through valve controlled hoses 18 and passes it via valve controlled hoses 28, 28A to a number of service stations 30 disposed adjacent the fuel tanks and connected by hoses 54, 57 to nozzles 56, 58 adapted to be connected to the tanks. The pressure at the outlet of the pump 22 is maintained at or below a predetermined pressure by a highpressure relief valve 34 connected between the inlet and outlet of the pump 22 through a fuel cooling device 36. Each servicing station 30 includes a pump 68, Fig. 2, associated with a pair of interconnected valves 62, 64 which in one setting connect the pump inlet via port 50 to a hose 28A, and the pump outlet via a port 52 to a hose 54 or 57, and in another setting connects the pump outlet to the hose 28A and the pump inlet to the hose 54 or 57. Thus the apparatus may be used for either feeding fuel to the aircraft tanks or for discharging fuel therefrom. The pressure at the outlet of each pump 68 is higher than the predetermined maximum pressure at the outlet of the pump 22 so that fuel may be returned to the reservoir 10 while the pump 22 is operating. Thus some of the stations 30 may return fuel to the aircraft fuel tanks whilst others are withdrawing fuel therefrom. Each station 30 includes pressure control valves, a fuel filter system, and a device for separating water from the fuel.</p> |
