A system for indicating that a vehicle has exceeded a predetermined speed comprises a rotatable disc 4, Fig. 2, carrying a magnetized element and driven from the driving mechanism of the vehicle at a speed proportional to the speed of the vehicle, the magnetized element serving to rotate by induction a revoluble shutter 5 which is arranged at a predetermined position to interrupt or permit the passage of light between a lamp 7 and a photo-electric device 8 which is arranged to operate a signal when the vehicle has exceeded the predetermined speed. The shutter 5 may have an arcuate slot 6, Fig. 1, for allowing light to fall on the photo-electric device 8 and the lamp 7 may be arcuately adjustable for setting the predetermined speed. The system may be driven by a flexible shaft direct from the vehicle or it may be inserted in the drive to the speedometer. As shown in Fig. 3, the shutter 22 is connected by a shaft 24 to a thin plate 23 which is angularly displaced by a magnetized element carried by a disc 27, the shutter 22 being thus deflected against the action of a spring 26. When the predetermined speed is reached, light from lamp 21 falls on the photo-electric device 18 reducing its internal resistance so that relays 19, 20 act in cascade to operate a signal lamp or buzzer. The arcuate slot in a shutter plate may be replaced by a peripheral gap in a depending flange which otherwise shields the photo-electric device from a suitably disposed lamp, Fig. 5 (not shown).</p> |
