发明名称 Porous catalytic electrode
摘要 931,778. Fuel cells. RUHRCHEMIE A.G. June 25, 1959 [July 19, 1958], No. 21888/59. Class 53. A fuel cell electrode consists of an active porous catalytic layer A covered on one or both sides with a porous inactive layer B the pores of which are smaller than those in the active layer A. When the electrode is used in a cell employing hydrogen peroxide, alcohol or a formate as fuel, decomposition of the fuel does not occur when no current is being taken from the cell. Fig. 1 shows such an electrode immersed in a mixture R of the fuel and electrolyte. The electrode may be used as a partition in a cell dividing it into two compartments containing the fuel and electrolyte respectively, and in another modification the electrode is mounted on a wall of the cell thus leaving only one face of the active layer covered with an inactive porous layer which is in contact with the mixed electrolyte and fuel. Electrodes of the above kind may also be used for the production of oxygen and hydrogen by the electrolysis of water, an apparatus for which is shownin Fig. 5. Two catalytically active electrodes A 1 , A 2 covered with inactive layers B 1 , B 2 are mounted in the walls of a cell containing the electrolyte E. The gases evolved from the active layers A 1 , A 2 are led into and stored in holders t 1 , t 2 . By reversing the process, the gases can be fed to the electrodes from which current can be drawn. Electrode materials.-The catalytic layer A 1 , Fig. 1, may have a skeleton structure consisting of 20% to 80% of a catalytic active Raney metal embedded in a conducting supporting skeleton as disclosed in Specification 806,644, the layer B having a similar structure but an inactive Raney metal. The Raney metal may be nickel when the electrode is used for the electrolytic production of hydrogen, and of silver for the production of oxygen. In a fuel cell the inactive layer may consist of porous copper, nickel, lead, titanium or other metal depending on the nature of the reaction, or of a porous plastic material. Specifications 667,298, 907,351 and 908,436 also are referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 848,586.
