A detergent composition comprises a compound of the formula <FORM:1009189/C4-C5/1> wherein R represents a C8- 20 alkyl radical and M represents hydrogen or an alkali metal, in admixture with water; conventional builder salts such as alkali metal sulphates, carbonates, silicates, phosphates (e.g. tetra potassium pyrophosphate) and borates; soil suspending agents such as carboxymethyl cellulose; soaps or other detergents; bleaching agents such as hypochlorite bleach; and suds boosting additives such as lauric diethanolamide. The compositions may be used in solution or bar form, and specified uses are for shampoos, dishwasher compositions and dentifrices.ALSO:The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:1009189/C2/1> wherein R represents a C8- 20 alkyl radical and represents hydrogen or an alkali metal. The above compounds are prepared by reacting an alkali metal salt of N-methyltaurine with an equimolar amount of a C10- 22 1,2-epoxy-alkane followed, if desired, by ion exchange treatment to obtain the free acid. |
