The present invention relates to a composition comprising an olive extract or hydroxytyrosol which is a compound isolated from the same as an active ingredient for preventing and treating a liver disease. The composition of the present invention is excellent in antioxidant activity and is effectively inhibits expression of gene involved in synthesis of triglycerides in hepatic tissue and sterol regulatory element binding protein (SREBP-1c) which is a transcription factor of protein; thereby can be used for preventing and alleviating the liver disease. The olive extract of the present invention shows a protective effect for materials such as carbon tetrachloride which cause liver damage, thereby can be clinically used as a biological control for preventing and treating the liver disease.
