<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lighting device which efficiently utilizes light of a light source and can be constituted of a small number of components, and a liquid crystal display device having improved brightness (luminance). <P>SOLUTION: The lighting device is configured to include: a tabular light guide plate; a light source part disposed on a side of the light guide plate; and a polarization separation element which is disposed between the light guide plate and the light source part and transmits linearly polarized light in a first polarization direction and reflects linearly polarized light in a polarization direction orthogonal to the first polarization direction. Furthermore, the lighting device includes a phase modulation element between the light source part and the polarization separation element.
