A playing aid for a stringed instrument, such as a guitar, banjo or violin, which comprises an alignment facility 1 located on the neck of the instrument. The alignment facility consists of a linear alignment element 4 which is parallel to the longitudinal axis of the neck of the instrument. The device also comprises a glider consisting of a collar 5 designed to receive a part of the player's hand, which is coupled to the linear alignment element. The glider moves or slides along the length of the neck of the instrument.
