The packaging machine according to the parent Specification is modified by substituting for the original folding blades 15, 16, a plunger 102 for insertion into the partly formed carton to define proposed fold lines, and two folding elements 115a and 116a pivotally carried by the plunger at 106 as shown. As a slider 14 moves the plunger 102 into the carton in the cell 3, Fig. 2, the folding elements 115a, 116a are moved from a closed to an open position by rollers 22 engaging inclined elements 108. When two rearwardly extending wings 103 of the plunger 102 are aligned with the proposed fold lines of the carton, Fig. 3, the rollers 20 will have moved past the position shown in Fig. 2 and will have moved outwardly into contact with pivoted run-on-tracks 107 so that the folding elements 115a and 116a are rocked inwardly and the carton flaps 25, 26 are folded approximately through 90 degrees about the edge of the wings 103. On continued movement of the plunger 102 and elements 115a, 116a, the tracks 107 are rocked towards each other as indicated by the arrows in Fig. 4 to fold the flaps 25, 26 against the inner walls of the container. The plunger 102 and the elements 115a, 116a are then withdrawn by the slider 14, the folding elements holding the flaps 25, 26 spaced apart as shown in Fig. 5 until the wing edges 103 have entered between the flaps 25, 26. During the further return movement of the slider 14 the guide rollers 22 rock the elements 108 idly in the direction of the arrows shown in Fig. 5 and pass between the run-on tracks 107 and the elements 108 and into the region of the rear track 123. |
