Provided is a control apparatus for an internal combustion engine that can adequately secure a required addition period of fuel that is added by a fuel addition valve, regardless of the operating state of the internal combustion engine. A fuel addition valve (24) is provided that is installed in an exhaust port (22) and can add fuel into an exhaust passage (18). An exhaust variable valve operating mechanism (50) is provided that makes a working angle of an exhaust valve (48) variable. Fuel addition is executed using the fuel addition valve (48) in synchrony with the valve opening period of the exhaust valve (48) mounted in the cylinder in which the fuel addition valve (24) is installed. A required addition period of fuel is acquired using the fuel addition valve (24). The working angle of the exhaust valve (48) is adjusted using the exhaust variable valve operating mechanism (50) in accordance with the required addition period.
