A system controls electrical devices associated with a property such as a domestic dwelling (home) or office. The system comprises a local area network (LAN) for communicating with the electrical devices 4-10 and also a wireless access gateway 14. One or more mobile devices 40-48 communicate with the gateway and a controller 20 connected to the LAN detects the relative locations of the mobiles depending on whether they can communicate via the gateway, i.e. are within range or not. The settings for the electrical devices are selected as a function of the locations of the mobiles with respect to the property and the controller responds to location changes by changing the operating states of the electrical devices. The system thereby matches the presence or absence of users to the operating states of devices. For example, an intruder alarm may be set or un-set, or devices may adopt a low power consumption state when a user is absent. |
