941,907. Washing air. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO. Ltd., and E. C. KENNEY. Feb. 3, 1960 [Feb. 4, 1959], No. 3887/59. Heading B1R. An apparatus for cleaning dust-laden air comprises an inlet chamber 4, an outlet chamber 6, a conduit 16, 18 interconnecting the chambers, the inlet part 16 of the conduit being scroll-like in cross-section (see Fig. 2) to provide an inwardly curved upper portion 20 and a lower edge 22 between which is a mouth 24 extending along the conduit. Both chambers are filled with water to a level S which overlies the edge 22 but is below the portion 20 (see Fig. 3, not shown), so that air entering the apparatus at 14 passes via the mouth 24, in contact with the water, to the conduit 16, passing through a sheet of water formed between an edge 32 and the opposite wall of the conduit. Water is removed from the air by a baffle 34 and filter 36 as it passes to an outlet 30 in which is a fan 26. A conveyer having mesh-like plates may remove sludge from the chamber 6.
