A process for coating a web substrate (18), in a coating machine (1), comprises the steps consisting in: - unwinding (U) the substrate to be coated (2) from a first reel (6) and running it out (F), - continuously coating a coating material by vaporization under vacuum onto one of the surfaces (14) of the moving substrate (2), - continuously detecting the presence of holes in all or part of the moving coated substrate (18), - continuously measuring the optical density of all or part of the surface (14) of the moving coated substrate (18), - generating signals which are functions of the holes detected and of the optical density measured, - continuously adjusting the settings of the machine (1) as a function of the signals generated, and - winding the coated substrate (18) onto a second reel (19). |
