A vertical take-off aircraft comprises a domed upper surface 1 and a flat bottom surface 2 between which are contained a centrally mounted radial flow fan 3, an annular air duct 4 and fan motor and drive gear 5, 6. The inlet to the fan is provided with a louvre comprising slats 14 pivoted across the intended direction of forward flight for either closing the intake or, when open, for collective or individual adjustment to control the airflow to the fan, and an annular fairing 13 provides a smooth entry. Air delivered by fan blades 3a passes between fixed guide vanes 11 and duct ribs 12 to outlet vanes 15 adjustable to control the flight of the aircraft. The space 8 houses passengers and/or freight. |
