A rotatable drum type washing machine of the present invention includes: a rotatable drum (3) for housing laundry; a vessel (3) for housing the rotatable drum; a motor (7) for driving the rotatable drum; a water supply unit (10) for supplying washing and/or rinsing water into the vessel; a circulator (17) for circulating the washing and/or rinsing water in the vessel into the rotatable drum; a foam detector (27, 28) for detecting an amount of foam; and a controller (22) for controlling at least one of the following steps a washing step, a rinsing step and water removal step. Then, the controller (22) is configured to control so as to rotate the rotatable drum at a predetermined rotational frequency based on the amount of foam detected by the foam detector (27, 28), and also to spray the washing and/or rinsing water onto the laundry in the rotatable drum (3) by the circulator (17). It is thereby possible to optimize driving of the rotatable drum (3) in accordance with a generated state of the foam, so as to enhance a cleaning effect.
