Long hair phenotype in canidae

The present invention provides a method for the analysis of the genetic disposition of long hair phenotype in canidae based on determining physically specific mutations in at least one allele of the gene FGF5. In addition, the present invention relates to the use of said new mutations described herein for determining a genetic disposition for a long hair phenotype in a canidae. The canidae are particular selected from Akita, Samoyed, Afghan hound, Eurasier and Siberian husky. Moreover, a genetic marker as well as test systems or test kits based on said genetic marker for use in determining genetic disposition of a canidae for long hair phenotype is provided. Finally, isolated nucleic acid molecules and oligonucleotide or probes are provided comprising the mutations defined herein.
