The method involves detecting and identifying a periodically recurring print pattern on the continuously processed material strip (11) by an imaging sensor arrangement (14), where the position of the material strip is determined relative to the machine cycle. A freely defined pattern is used as the pattern to be identified, which is arranged in the outwardly visible area of the material strip on the finished product.
