In a joint having a bearing liner 33 according to the parent Specification and a back-up piece 38 surrounding the liner, a preloading ring 44 is positioned about the back-up piece to distort it inwardly about the ball. The back-up piece is moulded from a thermoplastic material to a generally cup shape and is snapped over the liner-covered ball whilst in a heated condition. The ring 44 is made of thin metal accurately sized and is seated on the overlapping edge 46 of the upper socket part 30. Axial slits 42 (not shown) are provided about the mouth of the back-up piece. |
