Decorative laminates suitable for outdoor use comprise a base of fibrous material, for example Kraft paper sheets, some of which may be creped, impregnated with phenolic resin, a print sheet ofα-cellulose, paper or the like impregnated with melamine- or other aminotriazine-aldehyde resin, and a surface layer of non-porous methyl methacrylate polymer or copolymer, the layers being superposed and bonded together with heat and pressure. Double-faced laminates may be made by adding similar layers to the underside of the base layer. Single-faced laminates may be bonded to substrates such as glass fibre-reinforced polyester sheets, wood, hardboard, woodwaste or particle board, plywood, asbestos-cement board or plaster board. The phenolic resins used may be derived from phenol, cresols, xylenols, or tertiary alkyl phenols and formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde, benzyl aldehyde or furfural, or mixtures of these materials, with or without aldehyde-reactable substances such as urea, thiourea, substitution or not. Aminotriazines, e.g. melamine, or lignin derivatives. The aminotriazine resin used may, apart from melamine, be mono-, di- or trimethyl- or other substituted melamines, guanamines such as formoguanamine, acetoguanamine or benzoguanamine, or mixtures of these materials, reacted with formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde, butyraldehyde, benzaldehyde, or aldehyde-yielding materials such as paraformaldehyde or hexamethylenetetramine. These resins may also contain plasticizers such as dibutyl phthalate, dioctyl phthalate, low molecular weight polyethylene glycols,α-alkyl- D - glycosides or N - methylol - p - toluene - sulphonamide. The surface sheet may comprise a copolymer of methylmethacrylate with styrene, a substituted styrene such asα-methylstyrene,α-ethylstyrene, o-methylstyrene, or pethylstyrene, or with ethylmethacrylate, propylmethacrylate, butyl-methacrylate, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, acrylamide, methylacrylate, ethyl-acrylate, or butyl-acrylate.
