The tape printer (1) has a tape type indicator (800) with apertures that are formed in the vertical information sections of a tape cassette (30), which extend along a direction orthogonal to a feed direction. An arm detector has detecting switches that are located opposite the tape type indicator when the tape cassette is installed in a housing (8), and pressed by the tape type indicator to identify the tape type of the tape cassette.
